Behind the Scenes - February 2008

Jane Baugh has had a busy year, both in the office and out of it. I’m betting she didn’t start 2007 imagining there would be the remotest possibility of David her husband ending up the year as her office assistant. And, if it were needed, here’s further proof that there is more to being the Trust’s Secretary than sitting in an office, helping in the Trust shop, dispensing drinks on Members' evenings, etc., etc. …

I never thought, when I was given the job of secretary in September 1994, that I would still be here 14 years later! That in itself speaks volumes.

I have seen many changes over the years, and 2008 looks like being another exciting year ahead.

One of the highlights of 2007 was having a new recruit in the office. Tracey was due to go in for her operation and we needed cover, so I was asked if David (hubby) would like to take it on. Well, having never worked together in this sort of environment, I was a little apprehensive, but David was very enthusiastic. He had never had an “office job”, but I thought he is willing, very amiable, good telephone manner (ex B.T.) and makes a very acceptable cup of coffee, so why not give it a go.

It was a bit daunting for him at first, but he soon had the measure of things and coped very well. Ashley’s idea was that if things were quiet he could jump on the mower and cut some grass, multi-tasking!!

We didn’t fall out, though he did say I was a bit short with him at times. Pressure of work! Anyway he really enjoyed his time, and now knows what I have to put up with.

One of the other highlights was nothing to do with work, it was my three week trek in the Himalayas, but I could go on for ever on that one.

2008 has started well. I have even got out of the office and had the opportunity to have a couple of goes at flying “Fagin,” something completely different which all adds to the enjoyment of my job here at the Trust.
