Monthly Diary - April 2007

Representatives from RSPCA West Hatch visited the Trust with members of staff from an Estonian rehabilitation centre.

Apr

Big crowd!Children doing investigative workThe Easter school holidays started with the Bank Holiday weekend being launched as a Mad about Owls themed weekend. Children were invited to take part in an Owl colouring competition, to dissect owl pellets, to learn how to identify owls by sight and sound, and to use radio recievers to track released owls. The good weather over the whole of the two week holiday made it a busy time for the Trust, including registering almost double the number of members that joined during the previous Easter.

10th Apr

Interviews took place today for staff to replace James and Clive who are sadly leaving the Trust, and for additional temporary staff for the summer holidays.

13th Apr

Ashley gave an evening talk about the Trust's work to Wherwell's church group.

Chief Scientific Officer, Campbell Murn, flew to Pakistan to be brought up to date with the progress of the new Vulture Conservation Centre being built in Changa Manga, and to assist in trying to catch this year's chicks.

News from the area is not good. Two previously productive breeding sites are now empty, and only one nest site was found in the Toawala region. This nest contained but a single chick and a dead adult bird.

17th Apr

Ashley and Trustee John Ellicock met to discuss adjustments needed to update the Trust's strategic plan.
Andover VIP (visually impaired group) visited the Trust.
Ashley gives an evening talk to Chute Gardening club.

18th Apr
Discussions are held with suppliers to provide furniture for the new meeting and conference room facilities.
Malay Wood Owl chickMalay Wood Owl chick hatched. He is currently being hand reared to take part in demonstrations, and can be seen in an incubator through the hospital window.
22nd Apr
Hawk Owl chickA baby Hawk Owl hatched. This is the first chick from a clutch of eight eggs laid by our pair of Hawk Owls.
24th Apr
The New AntoniansTickets for The Hawk Conservancy Trust fundraising summer ball were available from today. To be held on Friday 20th July the evening will feature music from 15 piece swing band the New Antonians and an auction of promises presented by Chris Packham. Tickets are priced at £45 per person, or £40 per person if you pre-book a table of 10.
25th Apr
Sam up a tree Mjr Lewis ringing a Barn Owl chick Falconer Sam Hunt visited Salisbury Plain with major Nigel Lewis of the Imber Conservation group to begin the monitoring of Barn Owl nest boxes and the ringing of chicks.

Campbell gave Trust staff a powerpoint presentation with photographs of his trip to Pakistan.
Ashley gave an evening talk about the Trust to Thatcham Rotary Club.

The second Trustees meeting of the year was held.
27th Apr
Elaine Beer, a member who is an actress and RADA teacher, spent a weekend at the Trust listeneing to all the Trust commentators and providing advice on how to improve their presentational and vocal skills. It is planned that she will return in the winter months for some vocal coaching sessions.
